AssetTrader Buying Guide to Power Generators
Features and Options
As previously stated, generators are available in a number of sizes. The smallest generators begin at around 800 watts, reaching up to the very largest on the market, which are around 50kW.
Standby generators are employed when the main source of power has failed, and act as an emergency power source. However, portable generators are used to provide power to more temporary locations, or in areas in which a standard electrical generator cannot be installed. These are deigned to be used only for a short period of time, and consequently are generally smaller than standby generators, as well as being less expensive.
As generators can run on different types of fuel, you may wish to consider different options when buying your generator. For larger generators used for commercial purposes, diesel fuel is often more popular, as generally these appear to be relatively reliable. The alternative choice of gas or propane tends to rely upon the fuel which is most readily available in your local area, particularly with regards to standby generators. Generally portable generators use gas, though this proves problematic in that it cannot be stored for very long, hence the preference of propane by some.
A great feature of generators is the cooling system. These are necessary as the generator creates heat which may cause overheating. Cooling systems can function by either being air-cooled or liquid-cooled. Liquid-cooled systems are often preferred as they create less noise, and are arguably more reliable, though the benefits of air-cooled systems is that they are less expensive with regards to purchasing and maintenance costs.
